Talo can be just any type of house, and the word is used similarly to "rakennus" (building). It is more general than "koti" which means someone's home.

I left home → (Minä) lähdin kotoa (from my own home).

I left work → (Minä) jätin työni (stopped working at my current workplace completely).

I came from school → (Minä) tulin koulusta (from the school I attend).
I left school → (Minä) jätin koulun (stopped studying completely).
I am at church → (Minä) olen kirkossa (inside the church building or, more abstractively, I belong to church/Minä kuulun kirkkoon).
